Newvue Plastic Surgery & Skincare

Nose Surgery

No feature defines a face quite like the nose. Nose surgery, also known as Rhinoplasty, improves the appearance and proportion of the nose, enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose.

How Does Nose Surgery Work?

There are as many different techniques and approaches to nose surgery as there are nose problems, and Newvue’s goal is providing natural facial harmony. Generally, incisions are hidden at the nostril base and/or inside the nose allowing access to reshape underlining cartilage and/or bone. This may include lowering humps, narrowing of nasal bones, shaping of the nasal tip or nostril size and improving the angle between the nose and the upper lip.

Cartilage is a flexible and growing tissue, so results and recovery will vary. Swelling and discomfort will generally diminish in 1-3 weeks, but it may take 3-4 months or even longer to see full results.

Your Nose Surgery Options

Dr. Min will recommend a procedure to meet the unique needs of your face and nose. They will, whenever possible, perform what is called a Closed or Endonasal Rhinoplasty, meaning that the incisions are made inside the nose to minimize scarring.

In an Open Rhinoplasty, the incision is made in the small column of skin between the nostrils to allow for more direct access to nasal structures for more extensive remodeling.

In some cases a Secondary Rhinoplasty, also called Revision Rhinoplasty, may be performed to correct problems that persist or develop after a previous Rhinoplasty.

Filler Rhinoplasty is a technique that uses injectable fillers to smooth out sharp angles or fill depressions.

Your Initial Nose Surgery Consultation

The role of the consultation is to ensure that you feel informed, confident and excited.

The first step in your initial consultation is to evaluate your nose and understand your goals. We will ask you about your desired appearance, as well as questions about your general health and activity levels to determine if we can meet your expectations. We will analyze your face and evaluate the shape of your nose and the underlying cartilage and bone structures. After your consultation, photographs will be taken for additional analysis and your medical records.  We will walk you through your options, explain the details of the nose surgery procedure, and answer any questions you may have. You will have an opportunity to view extensive before and after photos. Together we will decide on the details and timing of your procedure.

Finally, the doctors will make sure you know exactly what will happen on the day of your procedure, what you will experience while you recover, and what you can expect in the months and years to follow.

Safety & Risks of Nose Surgery

Our approach at Newvue is to always put our patient’s safety above all other concerns. We have invested in absolutely state of the art tools, and our on-site surgical suite is one of the first in the region to be fully approved under the stringent new safety standards.

Nose surgery is a very common and safe procedure. Nonetheless, we feel it is important that all our patients fully understand the risk(s) associated with this or any surgical procedure. The most important thing to know is that Dr. Min and Newvue will stand by you should any complications arise and do everything we can to help you achieve your desired result. Risks associated with nose surgery include: possible reaction to anesthesia, infection, bleeding & hematoma, facial nerve injury/loss of sensation and/or asymmetry. During your initial consultation, Dr. Min will address all possible risks and complications with you and make sure that your questions and concerns are answered.

Prior to Your Nose Surgery Procedure

Prior to your surgery, we will schedule a preoperative appointment with Dr. Min. The purpose of this meeting is to make sure your procedure goes smoothly and efficiently. Our staff will review the risks and benefits paperwork, as well as your consent forms and answer any questions you may have.  You may be given prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be advised to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. You should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.

Men will need to shave at least their upper lip prior to the procedure.

Your Nose Surgery Procedure

We will do everything in our power to help you feel informed and relaxed on the day of your procedure. After you arrive, you will meet with Dr. Min and with your anesthesiologist. Once any questions you have are answered, you will be given medication to help you relax.

You will be brought into the surgical suite, where you will be prepped for surgery and given a general anesthetic. Surgery usually takes 2-3 hours.

You will wake up in the recovery room, where you’ll be closely monitored. We’ll let you know how everything went and advise you on what to expect as you recover. You’ll want to be sure to arrange for someone to pick you up and stay with you for the first couple days as you adjust.

After Your Nose Surgery Procedure

You’re still our patient after you leave, and we will be there for you as you recover to answer any questions you may have and advise you on any side effects you may be feeling. Nose surgeries are generally performed as outpatient procedures.  You can expect to feel tired and sore after the surgery. Nose surgeries are generally not painful surgeries, but you will experience some swelling, tightness and numbness, as well as visible bruising, all of which can be managed with medication. We will provide you with detailed instructions for care and recovery.

Recoveries will vary depending on the extent of the procedure. While some movement is permissible, most patients will want to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks. Dr. Min will advise you on the specifics of your recovery program.

Most patients return to work after a week, but you should avoid strenuous activity for at least 3 weeks, and avoid high impact activities (skiing, wakeboarding, contact sports) for the duration of your recovery (6-8 weeks).

Nose Surgery Results

Some results will be visible immediately, and will improve as swelling diminishes (1-2 weeks), but cartilage is a living, growing tissue, and full results may not be visible for several months. Scarring varies and will fade over time. The Newvue staff are always available to help you with any questions or concerns you may have during your recovery and after. We want to ensure that you are completely thrilled with your new look, and we’ll consider you our patient for life.
