Roux en Y Gastric Bypass
The Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, also known as the gastric bypass, is a very effective weight loss operation that combines both restriction and malabsorption to treat excess weight and obesity related diseases. It is technically more complex as it involves dividing both the stomach and the small intestine. The stomach is divided into a smaller gastric pouch about the size of an egg. Then the small intestine is divided and connected to the gastric pouch.
Patients can expect to lose 60-80% of their excess body weight in 12-18 months after surgery. Metabolically this powerful operation can result in dramatic improvement if not resolution of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes even before any weight loss. In addition the gastric bypass can also address gastroesophageal reflux.
